Carbonic acid water pH control dissolves CO2 into irrigation water at the pump station. The CO2 and water form carbonic acid (CO2 + H2O → H2CO3), which lowers pH and converts bicarbonates on the way to the field. When the water reaches the root zone and pressure drops, the acid reverts to CO2 and water. Nothing accumulates in the soil, and that is the difference that compounds over the life of a block.
Irrigation water across California routinely arrives between pH 7.5 and 8.5 with high bicarbonates. At that pH, iron, zinc, manganese, and phosphorus become progressively less available to the plant, and calcium carbonate precipitates inside drip lines and emitters. Bringing water pH to around 6.5 converts roughly half the dissolved bicarbonate and keeps those minerals in solution.
